<image:title>Blog - 2020 Studio Tour Update</image:title>
<image:caption>My sixth book (due fall 2020), What’s in the Rommegrot? is by Carol Hagen. Every family has “that story” that they love to tell and re-tell. This one is about a silly, memorable winter morning Carol spent with her granddaughter. We collaborated to create this keepsake book about the author’s favorite family foible. This book also revitalized my love of portraiture: I based the characters on my sister in law and her granddaughter (my grandniece) who lives in Stockholm, Sweden. Custom picture books? It really is possible!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 2020 Studio Tour Update</image:title>
<image:caption>This summer, I completed the illustrations for book #7, Monica the Muskie Legend, by Bob Allen, due fall 2020. Coming from an active angling family, I jumped at the invitation to illustrate a book about the love of fishing… and the pursuit of outdoor activities. It wasn’t until I sat down at the, literal, drawing table that it hit me: “Waitaminit, how do I paint an underwater landscape?” It was refreshing to imagine the story from a fisheye point of view. I also knew nothing about Muskie fishing. I’m a walleye gal. It’s a completely different sport, I learned. In my research, I was struck by the reverence in which this fish is held. Fishermen speak of her in hushed tones. The look on their faces as they cradle her for that one moment where two worlds meet, then part, is wonder-full. Upon completion of Monica I found myself, for the first time since 2016, without the next book project already in queue. What next? Well, that’s another story. Let’s just say a long dormant spark for portraiture has been rekindled… the next chapter.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gallery - Bear Neccessities</image:title>
<image:caption>“Bear Neccessities” – I spent an afternoon with this neighborhood bruin one fine summer day. He took quite a fancy to our old apple tree by the greenhouse. He was the picture of health; tubby with a glistening, black coat. We let him eat his full. I found a couple organic apples from the co-op that were past their prime… in the not-so-crisper drawer of the fridge. He ate all the tree apples but snubbed the others. Locavore.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gallery - Arvid & Walter</image:title>
<image:caption>“Arvid & Walter” – (find the clipping) I saw this photo in the paper years ago. Arvid Magneson was the fisherman’s name. He struck me as the quintessential Minnesotan ice fisherman; Carhart suit, exposed skin red-raw from sub-zero temps, strong Scandihoovian jawline, winning smile as he holds a trophy walleye.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Good Lookin’” – When a canine holds their chilly paw like this, it melts my heart. The fox intrigues me. Intent, clever, at turns wary, then frisky. What can I say, I just like the guy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Critters</image:title>
<image:caption>“Moose In Boots” – There is a saying among winter lovers; “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” A skier knows how to dress for frigid temps. One hates to miss a good ski just because of a negative number. Layers, baby, it’s all in the layers. How do all the woodland critters do it with just a thicker layer of fuzz? I’d recommend mukluks to the shaggy moose. Not only would it improve hoof-traction on ice, but they are pretty stylin’. You can find them made out of wool, canvas, or leather. I’ve had a few pairs over the years, and prefer the latter. But if I could fashion a cloven pair for a shivering moose, I would have to choose otherwise. He’s vegan after all. Yes, I’m a tough Minnesotan, but I can also be sensitive.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Bleeding Heart Blues” Original Watercolor This was the image I painted as the illustration design proposal for the book Flutter, Bye. I love the Blue Azure butterflies and this book was a wonderful excuse to study their complexity. In my childhood, my Mother always had a Bleeding Heart in the garden. She passed away in 2017. The next spring, an entire patch of Forget Me Nots appeared by the creek that runs along my garden. The miracle and solace of nature is ever healing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One day I hope to meet my little snowshoe hare. It will be on my favorite winter path that winds through the neighborhood. A light snow will be drifting down. I will come round the corner just past the cedars and she will be standing there in her wooly scarf and mittens. We’ll exchange a few pleasantries and ask after each other’s family, as neighbors do. Perhaps we’ll make a date for tea and scones. I’d like that. Available as 5x7 Metal Print or special order Giclee on paper.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Peek a Blue” - I find mice adorable. IF it is me who sees them first, not the other way around. It’s not that I am afraid of them, they just have a way of sneaking up on a person that makes me jump. More often, I think it is probably more of a mutual startling. The ol’ “What in the heck are YOU doing here,” kind of moment. Rather like when I forget that my husband, Jim, is home. Just by walking into the room, he can scare the bejeezas outta me. I’ll jump and say, “Don’t DO that!” He’ll look at me like I’m a lunatic, “I just wanted the scissors,” he’ll allege innocently, backing away. As if.</image:caption>

<image:title>Raven Lunatic - Yin Yang Raven</image:title>
<image:caption>“Yin Yang Raven” is the first in a series of original solar plate prints, inspired but the Mythology of Ravens across various cultures. In folklore and mythology, Raven often occupies dual roles: creator/destroyer, hero/villain, comic/tragic, generous/gluttonous. Across cultural lines raven often was originally white in color, evolving into a separate, opposite black raven, sometimes earning his darkness through heroism, sometimes via less admirable traits. For me, the moral lies in the duality of nature that these stories embrace: the balance of Yin and Yang. In addition, research documents not only biological fact on Corvids but also their social behaviors, including play… behavior that has no other apparent reason beyond entertainment; a lone raven repeatedly dropping, then swooping to catch small objects in mid-air, groups flying together handing off strings or sticks to each other. Soaring in pairs, one raven might spontaneously tuck a wing and roll onto its back, mid-flight, to lock talons with his cohort, tumbling through the air in a partnership of play. I can envision black raven and white raven doing so… Yin Yang Raven. Available as limited edition original Solar Plate Etching.</image:caption>

<image:title>Raven Lunatic</image:title>
<image:caption>From my series on Raven Mythology: “Bedazzled Raven Steals the Sun, Moon and Stars.” Original Solar Plate Etching. In the long ago, the world was cold and dark because the sun had been stolen by a selfish shaman who kept it shut away in a wooden box. Trickster Raven fooled the shaman into opening the box for “just a peek.” At that moment Raven dove in to steal the sun, snatching it up in his beak. In the ensuing skirmish, Raven momentarily lost his grip and dropped the sun. Two chips fell away to become the moon and the stars. Regaining his hold on the sun, Raven soared skyward and returned it to its rightful place high in the heavens for the benefit of all mankind. Burned by the sun’s intense heat, Raven’s flesh and feathers were singed as shiny and black as coal. For his sacrifice, his burned flesh is distasteful to all creatures and thus Raven is prey to no one. (Inspired by Haida legend)</image:caption>

<image:caption>“How Flounder Came to Be” - Original Solar Plate Etching In the long ago White Raven was pure and good while his brother’s soul was as dark as his shiny black feathers. Where White Raven loved to make new things, Dark One reveled in foiling such endeavors. In his efforts, White Raven created many living beings to populate earth’s lands, seas and skies. One day, he created the first fish; beautiful and shiny, elegant of line, with a strong arched spine designed for sure and strong movement through water. At the edge of the sea White Raven gave Fish the final flourishes of sheen and flash of color. Meanwhile, Dark One plotted from above, dropping a heavy stone onto Fish, flattening him and sending him to depths of the ocean, were he became the first Flounder… eyes upward, forever watchful from below. <image:caption>“Raven and the First Humans” - Original Solar Plate Etching After the great flood, Raven was walking along the beach foraging for something to eat when he spied a very large clamshell. Coming closer, he heard unfamiliar sounds coming from inside the shell. Ever curious, Raven peered within to see what was making these peculiar noises and spied numerous tiny beings huddled together, frightened after enduring the traumas of the flood. In order to coax the creatures to come out, Raven stood on top of the shell and sang gently to reassure them; “Come out, come out, no need to be afraid, I am Raven, who brought the sun back, I will not hurt you, come enjoy this beautiful world, it is safe, the flood is over.” Raven has many voices, ranging from sharp warning calls to crooning, lulling vocalizations, and he was careful to use his most soothing and melodious songs. One by one, the beings emerged… and this is the story of how Raven discovered the first humans, known today as the Haida peoples of British Colombia.</image:caption>

Where White Raven loved to make new things, the Dark One reveled in foiling such endeavors. In his efforts, White Raven created many living things to populate earth’s lands, seas and skies. Finally, he envisioned the perfect being. Deer would be a graceful creature, fleet of foot, bestowed with alert soft brown eyes and keen hearing. Noble and wise by nature, Deer would be directed to offer brave counsel and friendship to all. Placing a crown of antlers on this valiant new leader, white Raven leaned in closely to whisper his instructions. Before he could do so, Dark One, who was lurking nearby seized upon the moment to dive in, plummeting upon Deer who bounded away… thus instilling startle, instead of bravery, into Deer. <image:caption>“The Impatient Loon” - Original Solar Plate Etching Long ago Raven created many living things to inhabit the earth, visualizing one being that would roam land, sky, and sea. At that time, Raven’s feathers were the purest, most brilliant white. One day, he plucked one and used it to fashion a Loon. Spreading his luminous new wings, Loon was anxious to try them out. “Not yet, I’m not quite finished,” said Raven. The impatient Loon began to fidget. On the riverbank Raven made a fire. He tightly packed curls of birch bark into two stacked pots and put them in the flames, covering them with stones. Slowly, the birch smoked and flared, flared and charred. Meanwhile, Loon fidgeted. Over the hours, the blaze turned to coals and the birch turned to tar. Raven dipped the tip of a long stick into the pitch and used it to delicately paint Loon’s back. Creating patterns like sunshine dancing across dappled water, Raven worked meticulously. Loon fidgeted. Finally, Raven exclaimed, “Stop your squirming, or I cannot finish!” His patience spent, Loon leapt flappingly to his feet sending stick and pots flying, covering the exasperated white Raven with tar, making him as black as the pitch of night. Stumbling through the muddle of tar, Loon’s feet became leaden. To this day he remains graceful on water and wing, but ever cumbersome on land. (From the Inuit legend)</image:caption>

<image:caption>As the J.R.R. Tolkien saying goes, “Not all who wander are lost.” My daughter, Solveig (whose name comes from Edvard Greig’s “Peer Gynt Suite” composition; “Solveig’s Song”) is just that kind of wanderer. She’s also a hunter/gatherer/forager, always on the lookout for the bounty nature offers. I was following her along a woodland trail one day, probably looking for Chanterelle mushrooms, when she suddenly left the path and began to bushwhack, beckoning me to follow. We pushed through cedar trees, thick enough I almost lost her. Then her hand reached out to me through the dense underbrush, I took it and ducked to follow blindly. “Be careful now,” she said carefully guiding me out to the edge of a cliff. I can’t say what was more breathtaking; the astonishing view or the look of simple happiness upon her face. Available as limited edition original Solar Plate Etching.</image:caption>
