Highway View

Winter. Ah, winter. Minnesotan’s love their winters. The wise ones do anyway. If you hate the cold… and yet live here, endlessly complaining… I simply don’t understand and will probably avoid you. “Highway View” is the landscape out my living room window. Change of Weather

A good Lake Superior gale is called a “Nor-easter.” Wild wind and waves the likes
of which sent the Edmund Fitzgerald to her doom. November is especially rich in
turbulent weather. Portraiture in endless meditations on the shades of gray. In
a moment, winter descends, and not quietly. Late April the first amiable southern breeze arrives, most welcome. Available as limiter edition original Solar Plate Etching.

Solveig's Song.Lutsen.jpg

Solveig’s Song

As the J.R.R. Tolkien saying goes, “Not all who wander are lost.” My daughter, Solveig (whose name comes from Edvard Greig’s “Peer Gynt Suite” composition; “Solveig’s Song”) is just that kind of wanderer. She’s also a hunter/gatherer/forager, always on the lookout for the bounty nature offers. I was following her along a woodland trail one day, probably looking for Chanterelle mushrooms, when she suddenly left the path and began to bushwhack, beckoning me to follow. We pushed through cedar trees, thick enough I almost lost her. Then her hand reached out to me through the dense underbrush, I took it and ducked to follow blindly. “Be careful now,” she said carefully guiding me out to the edge of a cliff. I can’t say what was more breathtaking; the astonishing view or the look of simple happiness upon her face. Available as limited edition original Solar Plate Etching.

Devil’s Track River Elder

We came upon this cedar while snowshoeing. How long have those roots reached to the river? How many seasons have passed this sentry? Rendering the image, during an emotionally trying time, brought me solace. Working from a photo I’d taken, I methodically finished the drawing, created the solar plate, and then inked and wiped it in preparation for printing. The lengthy process was good therapy. It wasn’t until I pulled the first print that I noticed the Inukshuk in the rock. It was there with me all along. Available as a limited edition original Solar Plate Etching.
